Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, CA is the home to one of the oldest, continuously operating, professional basketball teams in the nation, The Sacramento Kings. With a seating capacity of 19,000 and a construction cost of $535 million, the developer’s intent was to make the arena the most high-tech facility in the NBA.

The arena includes a $2.5 million solar rooftop generating up to 1.2 megawatts of renewable energy for efficiency, a full interior laser show, and a 6,100 sq. foot videoboard holding one of the largest screens in the NBA. The videoboard is a mere ten feet shorter than the basketball court below. Golden 1 Center is one of the world’s most connected indoor sports and entertainment venues with two dedicated 100-gigabit Ethernet internet circuits. As the most energy-efficient building in the NBA, the arena is certified LEED Platinum.

Gordon Incorporated provided acoustical ceiling and wall systems throughout the arena. Since the requirement for the project was to achieve LEED Platinum certification, the selection of the correct raw materials was of great importance if the project was to gain 2 LEED points in the recycled content category. The high recycled content of the metals used to manufacture the Gordon acoustical ceiling and wall systems provided a great contribution to the certification. Designed by AECOM, Gordon Incorporated worked closely with the Independent Manufacturer Representative, The Finish Line, on product specifications and details, and the Installing Contractor, Performance Contracting, Inc., to ensure a flawless installation.

When walking through the dramatic entrance of Golden 1 Center, Aluma Vault 3000 custom perforated, torsion spring ceiling systems can be seen at the main level and 2nd level bridges. Many transitions occur due to the unique drywall soffit system which required custom designed, accessible floating ceilings to be created in the entrance area. Performance Contracting, Inc. worked closely with Gordon Incorporated to provide field dimensions for perfect fit between the soffits. Other ceilings on the main level are positioned at the apex of the lower level seating areas.

The ceilings in Golden 1 Center are designed to provide acoustical performance and reduce unwanted noise from the concessions located adjacent to the seating. Due to the octagonal design of the main level, additional unique ceiling shapes were required. The final ceiling design required 910 panels total, 166 of the panels were custom sized and shaped. Installation plans and schedules were closely monitored to ensure materials were manufactured and delivered in a sequence to gain the best efficiency in installation.

AECOM selected ALPRO® acoustical, corrugated metal wall panel systems due to the high Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) values and durability achieved. Panels were located in the upper bowl areas of the arena behind seating where acoustical performance is most desired. AECOM required an industrial look that was achieved with Gordon Incorporated’s clear matte powder coat finish.
